This page has the objective to guide your learning in French in order to be at a more functional level (level A2) in order to help you and and other volunteers to navigate le monde au tour de toi for the Canada Games 2019 à Red Deer.

In order to make a reasonable assessment of your French at the A2 Level, it is important to all be starting from the same point of reference in terms of background knowledge between the French and English languages.

1. How are French and English different?
French and English share a lot in common, about 90% of nouns, suffixes, prefixes, adverbs and adjectives are similar or share similar root words or origins, so when in doubt say the English word with your best Peppi le Pew accent.

2. WHY ??? Why masculine feminine?
French is an older language than English, this explains why there is no IT as a pronoun. The creators of the French language looked at the world and decided to use the human model of masculine and feminine to truncate or shorten their language. This is why when looking at the world around them they decided to give all objects a gender, either masculine or feminine, usually based on their latin or other origins and spellings. This explains why there are issues with possession in French as the possession goes with the gender of the object and not the gender of the owner of that object. Seeing the world in either Female or Male means that you have to have an UN, UNE, DES, or LE, LA, LES before all nouns when speaking in French where in English we do not have this need, our objects are neutral or non gender specific.
Elle est une gomme. She is an eraser. Il est un crayon. He is a pencil. Elle est une gomme à BOB. C’est SA gomme (her eraser)

2.
-Verbs and actions, STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FRENCH AND ENGLISH...
When creating sentences, there is NO present progressive/ or continuous  i.e. the sentence I am walking to the store. This sentence can only be stated, I walk to the store. Je marche au magasin.

-NEGATION
NE  and PAS are placed around the
conjugated verbs in sentences.
Je NE marche(verb) PAS au magasin. I don’t walk to the store. Je n’ai pas marché au magasin. I didn’t walk to the store.
The PAS cans be replaced with JAMAIS, RIEN, and other negating words in order to increase or decrease the effect of the negative sentence. Je ne marche JAMAIS au magasin.

-THERE is no present progressive in French, but there is a Past Progressive continuous( I am crossing the street doesn't exist but I was walking across the street does)
I walked to the store. (simple past) J’ai marché au magasin. (passé composé)
was walking to the store.(past progressive or past continuous) Je marchAIS au magasin(IMPARFAIT)
Imparfait endings...(ING)
AIS(je)
AIS(tu)
AIT(il, elle, on,)

IONS (nous)
IEZ(vous)
AIENT(ils,elles)

3. THERE IS NO…

Est-ce que tu peux aller me CHERCHER de la pizza?Est-ce que tu peux me COLLECTER de la pizza.

PHRASAL VERBS OR PREPOSITIONAL VERBS IN FRENCH Take up, take down, take in, take to, heat-up, cool-down

4. Other differences include  pronunciation of words, cultural differences in politeness, and a huge chunk of communication is NON-VERBAL so speak with gestures as much as possible.

5. Conjugating verbs in English is easier as there is just one major change. In French there are 6 different changes in one of 3 different verb families and there are irregular verbs. A verb either from the IR, ER, or RE verb families and there are EXCEPTIONS.

I walk
You walk
